Ashen Launch Hiccups - Still Not on Xbox Play Anywhere Despite Promises
This year’s game awards came with a lot of surprises, and among them was the launch of action-RPG Ashen. Ashen, coming from the developer A44 and Publisher Annapurna Interactive is a game that takes players through a Dark Souls-esque-like experience that has a rich art and design direction. Ashen is currently available on Xbox One and PC.
According to the developers, Ashen would release in 2018, with so few days remaining to end the year, many fans had lost hope-but no more. The game launched at midnight (December 6th) on Xbox One where it is available through Xbox Game Pass.
PC fans will not be buying the game on the Steam Store since the PC version isn’t available on Steam as presumed. Ashen’s Steam page is currently still inactive, and the game has been launched on the Epic Games Store. Ashen is also one of the few games that first went live on Epic Store. It is currently is available for $40 on either platform.
Ashen Gameplay Trailer 2018
Ashen is a co-op adventure game. It’s a story of a wanderer looking for a place to call home. At its peak, this game is about forging relationships since players often cross paths with one another choosing to guide those they trust. It is a world with hardly any sun, and the little light that exists is from eruptions that have filled the entire surface with volcanic ash. The player is delved into a world where nothing exists no matter how tightly one decides to cling on it.
Its initial omission on Xbox Anywhere came as a surprise to many since it was advertised on that platform for years. Xbox Anywhere platform allows its users to sync their game progress across both Windows 10 and Xbox One on a single purchase. An added advantage is its support for PC games inside Xbox Game Pass. To this moment, Ashen is neither listed as Xbox Play Anywhere on its Microsoft Store page, despite being listed on the Xbox Play Anywhere website.
The Ashen team announced a day after the initial release that they’re indeed going to have the game on the Windows 10 Microsoft store.
Ashen through a statement to its fans, stated that they are aware of the game’s unavailability on Windows 10 Microsoft Store on day one, and they are working with their partners at Microsoft on bringing Ashen to Microsoft Store as soon as possible. They added that launching on Epic Games Store was a unique opportunity for an Indie title like Ashen.
You can buy the game on the Microsoft Store as of right now but not for the PC and its still not available on Steam or Xbox Play anywhere.
Their launch on Epic Games could be an exclusivity deal. Epic Games offers developers a lucrative 88 percent share of revenue from game sales that are offered through its platform, that beats both Microsoft and Steam by a significant margin. According to game critics, the competition Epic Games has brought to the table should light a fire under its rivals to offer better terms to developers. As it is, its exclusivity rights might already be causing harm to Steam (PC) and Xbox Play Anywhere, one of the most consumer-friendly platforms with cross-device offerings.
Ashen is being published by the game division of Annapurna which has steadily over the years become one of the most promising gaming labels. Before Ashen, Annapurna has published it indies such as What Remains of Edith Finch, Gorogoa, and Florence.
